The Committee on Admission welcomes applications for first-year and transfer admission. When we read applications, we value intellectual ability, academic achievement, and personal qualities that will contribute to the University community.
In particular, the Committee on Admission focuses on:
Excellent performance in a rigorous secondary-school program, including at least four units of English, four of college-preparatory mathematics, two of foreign language, one of social science, and two of science (engineering applicants must take three units of science, including chemistry and physics). These are minimum requirements; since most successful applicants exceed them, we recommend that candidates take the most rigorous academic program available in their schools, including at least five academic courses each year and AP, IB, and honors courses whenever possible.
Results from the SAT or ACT with writing, using the highest score on each section.
Results from two SAT II Subject Tests of your choice are strongly recommended. If you intend to study the sciences, we recommend choosing mathematics as one of the two subject tests.
Recommendations from a school official and a teacher of the applicant's choice. The school official is usually a guidance counselor. This is for first-year applicants only. Recommendations are not required for transfer students.
